Early Life and Education
Maryanne was born on January 8, 1934, in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the oldest of three children born to J. Clayton and Anne Arthur. Her childhood was marked with an intense interest in learning and a faith-filled life centered around Corpus Christi Church and School.
Following high school at the Notre Dame Preparatory School, Maryanne entered nursing school and trained at Mercy Hospital. Her training was interrupted with marriage to her devoted husband, William Valentine Markiewicz, and joining him in Texas as he served his country in the Army during the Korean War. She and Bill were blessed to have their first child during the Texas tour of duty.
Maryanne’s early adult years were filled with the care of her children as well as close relatives while allowing her husband to finish his college degree.
The young family moved to Tennessee and Maryanne provided a wonderful home environment for their 5 children. Life was full of school activities, home-made birthday cakes, cub and boy scouts, volunteering at schools and the church.
Once the children were old enough, Maryanne resumed nursing by completing an Associate Degree in Nursing at Cleveland State Community College. Family and Personal Life

Their union was one of deep love, mutual respect, and love for the church. Together, they raised five children: William, Micheal Anne, Bruce, Peggy, and Stephen, who were the light of her life.
Maryanne's love of history and learning influenced her children. During their visits, she would share her latest commentary or book review.
Maryanne's commitment to her community extended beyond her professional and family life. Maryanne served as Vice Chairman of the Food for Elderly Campaign, where she cooked food and delivered it to those in need. As if this weren’t enough, she served on the human resources committee of the League for Women Voters with a focus on housing problems in Bradley County.
Maryanne was a devout Catholic. As an expression of her faith, she volunteered at St. Therese of Lisieux as a sponsor of the Catholic Youth Organization.
