Marvin J. Smith, 62, entered into his eternal life after a valiant battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (or Lou Gehrig?s Disease) at Bradley Memorial Hospital in Cleveland, Tennessee, on Tuesday, July 18, 2006. Marvin was a native of North Carolina and moved to Cleveland in 1962. He was a graduate of Lee College and a Church of God minister. He served as pastor of churches in Andrews, North Carolina, Sullivan, Indiana, Gas City, Indiana and Alma, Georgia. While living in Cleveland he served as chaplain of NHC Health Care (formerly Parkwood Nursing Home) for the last 24 years which is an outreach ministry of the North Cleveland Church of God. He was employed by Kruepke Trucking and Ligon Trucking. He was preceded in death by his parents, William M. and Lena P. Smith and one infant brother, Marvin Leroy Smith. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Montgomery Smith and daughter, Christel M. Pankey both of Cleveland; one son, Dr. Marvin "Monty" Smith of Knoxville, a son-in-law, Thomas J. Pankey of Cleveland; a daughter-in-law, Staci J. Smith of Knoxville; two granddaughters, Shelby Pankey of Cleveland and Ella Shea Smith of Knoxville; two step grandchildren, Daniel Pankey and Lyndsey Sandidge; three sisters: Hilda G. Walston of Macclesfield, North Carolina, Juanita S. Everette of Powhatan, VA and Alice S. Harris of Tarboro, North Carolina; four brothers: Clarence M. Smith and George M. Smith of Pinetops, North Carolina, Richard J. Smith of Chesterfield, VA and Henry L. (Hank) Smith of Cleveland; two brothers-in-law: David A. Everette of Powhatan, VA and Austin E. Harris of Tarboro, North Carolina; four sisters-in-law: Eloise Smith and Betty Smith both of Pinetops, North Carolina, Colleen Smith of Chesterfield, VA and Pat C. Smith of Cleveland; nieces: Joann Balazsi, Betty R. Watson of Pinetops, North Carolina, Judy Greene of Overland Park, KS, Lou Flora of Grimesland, NC, Frances Zaun of Amelia Court House, VA, Olivia S. Blazer of Cleveland; ;nephews: Allen Walston of Macclesfield, NC, David L. Everette of Chesterfield, VA, Bruce Everette of Powhattan, VA, Elwood and David Harris of Tarboro, NC, Richard Smith of Midlothian, VA and Hank L. Smith, Jr. of Cleveland. A funeral service will be held July 21, 2006 at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Mitchell Maloney and Reverend Guinn Green officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Monty Smith, Hank L. Smith, Jr., Dr. Arlynn Blazer, Reverend David Boles, Daniel Pankey and David S. Harris. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 20, 2006 from 5-8 p.m. and Friday, July 21, 2006 from 1-3 p.m. at the funeral home.
