Robert Hoyle Gibson Jr.

December 25, 1926 — August 18, 2006

Robert Hoyle Gibson, Jr., age 79, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Friday, August 18, 2006 in a Chattanooga hospital with his wife of 55 years and his four children by his side. He was the son of the late Harriett Brown Gibson and Robert Hoyle Gibson, Sr., of Waynesville, NC. Bob was an employee of Bowater Southern Paper Corporation for 37 years, retiring in 1992. At Bowater he served as Chief Engineer and Major Projects Manager. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, and Masonic Lodge #134. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving also in the Korean Conflict, and was an Eagle Scout. He is survived by his wife, Edna Callahan Gibson of Cleveland; four children: Virginia "Ginny" Brewer and husband John of Park City, UT, Robert Hoyle Gibson III and wife Rebecca of Knoxville, Mary Anne Gibson of Cleveland, and Nancy Dowling and husband Tom of Cartersville, GA; nine grandchildren: Ginny Brewer of Glendale, CA, Michelle Blackwelder of Nashville, Patrick and Maggie Dowling of Cartersville, GA, Hannah Metzger of Nashville, Robert Hoyle Gibson IV, Rachael, Emily and Danielle Kiser, all of Knoxville. In addition, he is survived by two brothers: Thomas Gibson of Leicester, NC, and Aaron Gibson of Seaford, VA; two sisters: Ida Lou Milne of Venice, FL, and Harriett Venable of Clemmons, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Joseph Tanner officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. His family will receive friends from 5 ? 8 p.m. Sunday at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home followed by a Masonic Service. They will also receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday in the narthex of the church prior to the service.
