Burkett McCann

Burkett McCann, Sr., age 82, the son of the late John McCann and Julia McCann of Cleveland, Tennessee went to be with his loved ones on Monday, December 18, 2006. Mr. McCann began a ministry in a little log cabin off Bates Pike in Cleveland, TN. Being called into a ministry of Evangelism he preached in brush harbors, tents, houses and churches throughout the eastern United States. In 1959 he helped his brother build a little church off Polk County Avenue in Cleveland, TN where revival fire began to burn, mighty works healing and salvations were preached in the lovely name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Souls were saved; baptism was ministered in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. The name of the little church was Pentecostal Tabernacle. With his brother John W. McCann being pastor, many churches grew from this revival too numerous to mention. But, we would like to mention that the little church in Cleveland, TN has relocated to Benton, TN where his brother John Wesley McCann is presiding Bishop and pastor. Brother Burkett McCann was a member and elder of Spoken Word Tabernacle, 1934 Circle Drive, Cleveland, TN. Brother Burkett McCann attended services also at Rural Vale Church of Jesus Christ pastored by his grandson, Dennis Winston Hicks, Jr. Mr. McCann was the husband of Sallie Mae Yarber McCann for 62 years who was a life long companion with five children: Mrs. Geraldine McCann Hicks of Tellico Plains, TN, Mrs. Dortha Ann McCann Weaver of Cleveland, TN, Burkett McCann, Jr. of Cleveland, TN, Linda Mae McCann, (deceased) and Lucretia Geraldine Brown Nicholson of Cleveland, TN; three sons-in-law: Dennis Winston Hicks, Sr. of Tellico Plains, TN, Harold Willis Weaver, Sr. (deceased) and Tony Nicolson of Cleveland, TN; one daughter-in-law, Lois Ann Cross McCann of Cleveland, TN; five brothers: Rosco Black (deceased of Cleveland, TN), Eulis McCann (deceased of Blue Ridge, GA), Amos McCann of Cleveland, TN, Ernest McCann (deceased of Cleveland, TN) and Bishop John Wesley McCann of Benton, TN; twelve grandchildren: seven grandsons, Harold, Jr. (deceased), Tony, Jonathan, Burkett, III, Dennis, Jr., Phillip and Matthew; five granddaughters: Cyrethia, Tammie, Melissa, Angel and Sarah; nineteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Reverend Dennis Winston Hicks, Sr. of Tellico Plains, TN, Reverend Jimmy Painter of Gastonia, N.C. and Brother Howard Carroll of Manchester, TN officiating. Interment will follow Hayes Shed Cemetery. His grandsons, Tony, Phillip, Jonathan, Burkett III, Dennis and Mikey will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Evangelist Joe Roberts, Pastor Charles Hyde, Evangelist Samuel Burger, Bishop Boyd Lawson, Pastor Lawrence Waller and Evangelist Herman Garland. His family will receive friends Wednesday after 6:00 p.m. and also on Thursday after 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
