Amos Edward Burnette

July 30, 1927 — January 8, 2007

A long time Cleveland resident Amos Burnette died January 8, 2007 after a lengthy illness. He was 79. A Marine Corps veteran, he served in the Pacific during World War II with the 4th Marine Division. He was a Bradley County Deputy Sheriff and a policeman for the city of Cleveland in the 1960?s. He also worked as a civil investigator for the law firm of Finnell, Thompson, Scott and Logan for 25 years. He ran AmVets Post 13 in Cleveland until he retired three years ago. He was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Waterville Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carson and Ethel Burnette; a brother, Columbus; and a stepson, Randall Howard. He is survived by his wife, Starr; a daughter, Deborah Burnette and her children, Nick, Katharine and Evan; a son, Richard Burnette, his wife Malinda and their sons Eric and J.R.; sisters, Wanda Grider, Mariam Starling and her husband Elton, Marie Kiser, and Pat Turner and her husband, Ed; and several cousins, nieces and nephews and their families. He is also survived by step-grandchildren, Josh, Joey and Dusty Howard; stepson, Douglas Howard, his wife Linda and their children Scotty and Shasta; step-daughter, Angela Scroggins and Robby Moses and her children Derek Scroggins; daughter, Stephanie Scroggins and Michael Bilbery and their sons Jacob and Austen; and Aaron Scroggins and his wife Cassandra and their son Riley; and stepson Bill Howard and his children, Michael, Calisia and Cindy. The family will welcome visitors at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home and Crematory Wednesday, January 10, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There will be a graveside service at noon on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at the veterans section of Fort Hill Cemetery in Cleveland, Tennessee. Pallbearers will be Dale Turner, Chris Turner, Doug Smith, Ricky Stevenson, Jody Elrod and Greg Chastain. Memorials may be sent to the St. Jude Children?s Hospital, Attention: Memorial Department, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
