Edith Sullivan Hyde

Edith Jones Sullivan Hyde, 96, a native of Cleveland, passed away early Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007 following a series of strokes occurring since mid-September of 2006. Affectionately known as "Aunt Edith" by friends and family, she was an icon on Centenary Avenue, having lived there at various times since 1924. She was one of the oldest living members of the Broad Street United Methodist Church and member of the Fealty Sunday School Class. She was an active volunteer, serving as a Sunday school teacher, officer of the United Methodist Women, and of her Circle. A 1928 graduate of Bradley Central High School, she attended Centenary College and the University of Chattanooga where she was a member of AD Pi Sorority and voted "prettiest" in 1930. She married her high school sweetheart, William Wendell (Sully) Sullivan who returned to Bradley as a beloved coach. A life-long teacher, she taught at Mayfield School and Templeton Hill School in Cleveland. After her husband?s death in 1960, she affiliated with Insurance Incorporated for 12 years. She was also married to Salem Hyde who died in 1969. She was preceded in death by her parents John Leonard Jones and Hettie Lawson Jones and a brother William A. (Bill) Allan Jones Sr. Survivors include her children and their spouses: William Wendell (Jack) Sullivan Jr. and Loraine Sullivan of Tifton, Ga., and Laura Sullivan Barkley and Don Barkley of Atlanta, Ga. Grandchildren are: Holly Sullivan Simpson of Macon, Ga., Rebecca Sullivan Gill of Tifton, Ga., and Laura Barkley Ramsey of Richmond, Va. Great grandchildren include: Ann Simpson, Katherine Simpson and James Simpson Jr. of Macon, Ga., Edward Jarrett Ramsey IV and Sara Sullivan Ramsey of Richmond, Va. She is survived by a host of nephews and nieces including Allan Jones, Amy Jones Banks, Edith Ann Jones, Jane Sullivan Sain, all of Cleveland; Harry Lee Million and Michael Ralph Mount of Oregon; Edith Lynn Million and Sully Million of Florida; Ella Sue Sullivan Bunch and Sally Sullivan Cook of Chattanooga; Patsy Sullivan Fitzpatrick and William Sullivan Mount of California. A host of great nephews and nieces also survive her as well as a family of special friends, affectionately known as "The Golden Girls," two special caretakers Debby Wood and Debbie Lockwood, and her "adopted" son Luther Westfield. Funeral will be conducted at Broad Street United Church on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 3 p.m. Family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1:30 p.m. prior to the 3 o?clock service. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Cemetery with nephews and great nephews as pallbearers: Allan Jones, Will Jones, Bailey Jones, Richard Banks, Bradley Banks, Julian Sullivan, John Haile and Jim Park.
