Cecil W. Newman, age 88, a resident of Charleston, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007 at the family residence. He was of the Baptist faith and was a former music director of several Baptist churches in the Cleveland and Athens area. He was employed with Bowater Corporation for 32 years. He was an excellent table tennis player and a master craftsman of wood working. He was a veteran of the United States Army Airforce where he served in World War II in the Pacific and China. Mr. Newman was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Murray Newman and was also preceded in death by a son, Stacy Newman and ten brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Edna Miller Newman of Charleston; two children and spouses: Perry Keith Newman and Linda Newman of Knoxville, and Vicki Johnston and Sheridan Johnston of Charleston; daughter-in-law, Shelia Newman of Calhoun; four grandchildren: Brad Steven Newman, Carrie Hicks, Amy Newman and Kadence Newman; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Dr. Reed Wright and Pastor William Spencer officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Kevin Myers, Sheridan Johnston, Jeremy Goins, John Goins, Brad Newman and Derrick Hicks will serve as pallbearers. His family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Parkinson Foundation or a charity of your choice.
