Rebekah Grace Cooley

Lois Evelyn Horton Smith, 82, a resident of Cleveland, went to be with the Lord August 29, 2007 after a very long illness. She was being cared for at her home by her family and assisted by SkyRidge Hospice. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy for which she was a lay minister. She left a legacy of love and was greatly loved. She had a mixture of birth children, step children and adopted grandchildren and loved them all the same. She was a fantastic poet and was published in many papers and magazines and was always writing personal poems for special occasions. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Virgil E. Smith; mother, Dessie McQuire Horton; father, James S. Horton, Sr.; stepmother, Ethel Smith Horton; brothers, Gordon Horton and James S. Horton, Jr.; an infant sister; stepchildren: Mary Smith Adkins, Everett Randall Smith, Burl Eugene Smith and Ocie Smith Hunter; four grandsons, one granddaughter and three great granddaughters. She is survived by her daughters, Betty Smith Cole and Joy Smith; son, James David Smith; 28 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren including precious little newborn, Jacob Morgan Cole; 32 great great grandchildren; sisters: Elaine Ivy and husband Jack of AL, Virginia Green of Chattanooga and greatly missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, very special friends and longtime neighbors, the Trentham and Burgiss families who are a part of our family. Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 P.M. Sunday at Keith Street Church of God of Prophecy with Pastor John Stone and the Reverend Luther Massengale officiating. Interment will be at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with David Smith, Michael Smith, Bill Cole, Christopher Cole, Tom Taylor and Gene Cox serving as pallbearers. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service. Her family will receive friends from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the church. Ralph Buckner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
