Our beloved husband and father, Glen M. Byers B.S., B.A.,D.D.S., M.D., J.D., M.Ed., born April 22, 1937 passed away quietly and peacefully on June 4th at his family residence. His passion for education began at the University of Michigan where he earned his degree in dentistry. He then graduated from Wayne State University with a medical degree, later specializing in otolaryngology. In 1987 he earned his law degree at the Nashville School of Law. In 2004 he attended Lee University with his granddaughter Lauren and earned his Masters in Education. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a Lieutenant Colonel and qualified to fly such jets as the T-33, the F-106 fighter and the F-4 Phantom. He was also a Federal Aviation Administration examiner in Cleveland. Dr. Byers started his medical practice in Cleveland in 1973. He was a staff member at Bradley Memorial and Cleveland Community Hospitals. During his retirement he worked part-time with Cleveland Care Clinic and Physicians Plus. In addition to his medical and legal careers, Dr. Byers was a secondary education teacher and publisher. He was one of the original publishers for the newspaper ,The Morning Sun, which ran its first edition May 10, 1976. He was a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Tennessee?s 3rd District as a Republican in 1980 and 1982. He was an active member of First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Marsh Byers and mother Emma Bethel Byers. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pat Millirons Byers; daughter and son-in-law Tammy and Leslie Milligan; daughter Kim Brett; son and daughter-in-law Scott and Robyn Byers; daughter and son-in-law Pamela and Chad Williams; grandchildren, Lauren Brett, Ozzy Milligan, Chase Brett, Bailey Byers, Breton Williams, Caden Byers, Cale Williams, and Paulina Williams; and step-grandchildren; John Milligan, Katherine Milligan Dodson, and Jennifer Milligan; sister and brother-in-law; Shirley and John Hearnsberger, sister Helen Byers Brown and sister and brother-in-law Brenda and Harry Smith; sister-in-law Marie Millirons; brother-in-law John Millirons; brother and sister-in-law Jack and Ruby Millirons; brother and sister-in-law Chuck and Mary Millirons, sister-in-law Kay Fulford, sister and brother-in-law Alwayna and Bill Hixon, sister and brother-in-law Linda and Michael Bernard; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. (CST) Saturday, June 7, 2008 in the chapel of Paran United Methodist Church in Cookeville, Tennessee with a graveside service to follow. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Dr. Glen Marsh Byers D.D.S., M.D., J.D., M.Ed. and Mrs. Pauline Byers Memorial Scholarship Fund at Lee University, 1120 North Ocoee Street, Cleveland, Tennessee 37311.
