Harry Norman Dean

September 23, 1941 — July 25, 2008

Harry Norman Dean, 66, formerly of Cartersville, GA, and a resident of Cleveland since 1971, passed away Friday, July 25, 2008, in a Chattanooga hospital. He was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Chancel Choir. Mr. Dean received his B.A. Degree from Carson Newman College and M.A. and ED.S. degrees from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He served in the field of education for more than 35 years. He was employed with Cleveland State Community College as an associate professor of English. He served as a member of the Faculty Senate and was selected as an Outstanding Faculty Member. He was a noted author and published several books of poems. Mr. Dean was passionate about many varied styles of music, wrote songs, played several musical instruments, participated in traditional folk and bluegrass music sessions, and was a former member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Chorus. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Clay Dean and Mary Herndon Dean. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Dean of Cleveland; sons: Thomas H. Dean and wife, Wendy of Wilmington, NC, and Charles T. Dean and wife Jennifer of Lebanon, TN; granddaughters: Mallory Kathryn Dean and Taylor Caroline Dean both of Lebanon; brother, Lamar Wesley Dean of Johnson City and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Monday, July 28, 2008, at Broad Street United Methodist Church with the Reverend Debbie Stokes and the Reverend Reed Shell officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. His family will receive friends from 2 to 4 P.M. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to Broad Street United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 155 Central Ave., Cleveland, TN 37311 or Cleveland State Community College Foundation, 3535 Adkisson Dr. N.W., Cleveland, TN 37312.
