Mary K Quimby

February 7, 1926 — October 23, 2012

Mary K. Quimby died October 23, 2012 in Cleveland, Tennessee. She was born February 7, 1926 in Peacham, Vermont to Philip B. Kinerson and Minnie Welch Kinerson, their only daughter among six children. Following her 1943 graduation from Peacham Academy, Mrs. Quimby attended the University of Vermont, leaving her pre-medical studies to marry her high school sweetheart, the late James M. Quimby, Jr. in April 1945 during his final leave before the end of WWII. The Quimbys made their home in Peacham, where they initially operated a dairy and maple farm, and raised their two children. Mrs. Quimby, a strong advocate of social justice, was always active in civic affairs and the Democratic Party. An avid reader, she served on the Board of the Peacham Library. When her children reached college age she began a career with the State of Vermont, first as a social worker, later with the Vermont State Police, and concluding with service at the Legislative Council where she had a role in drafting legislation. Upon retirement from civil service, she studied for real estate licensure and opened Peacham Real Estate, successfully operating her business for several years before she and her husband retired to Brevard, North Carolina in 1997. In Brevard, the Quimbys stayed abreast of Vermont news, kept in touch with family and friends, joined the First United Methodist Church and made many lasting friendships. Mrs. Quimby was active there in her Sunday school and especially enjoyed the church?s quilting group. The Quimbys moved to Garden Plaza at Cleveland, Tennessee in 2006, affiliating with the First United Methodist Church of Cleveland. Mrs. Quimby was an active reader until the end, and contributed many books to the Garden Plaza collection. Her survivors include her son Gerry Quimby and his wife Janet of Lyndonville, Vermont, her daughter Cynthia Q. Young and her husband David of Venice, California, and grandchildren Alex, Manny and Julia Young and their families. Mrs. Quimby also leaves her brother David Kinerson and his wife Sheila of Orlando, Florida, her brother-and-sister in law Richard and Lorna Quimby of Peacham, VT, and sister-in-law Irene Kinerson of Barnet, VT. Mrs. Quimby?s many nieces and nephews include Donald and Nancy Kinerson of Cleveland, Tennessee, who encouraged and supported Mr. and Mrs. Quimby in their move to Cleveland, and to whom Mrs. Quimby?s entire family is especially grateful. A memorial service will be held November 17 at 2 p.m. at Garden Plaza at Cleveland, with interment in Peacham, VT next summer. We invite you to send a message of condolence and view the Quimby family guest book at www.ralphbuckner.com. Ralph Buckner Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements
