Jarvis A. Gober, 83, a resident of Cleveland, passed away peacefully Friday, June 19, 2009 at his home. He was born February 17, 1926 in McGehee, AR and was the son of Joseph Leonard and Lottie Viola Bailey Gober. He was valedictorian of Arkansas City High School, class of 1944 and was captain of the football team. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force serving in World War II in the South Pacific. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 81 and VFW Post 2598. He was retired from Bowater Paper Company as Assistant Superintendent of the mechanical pulping department in March 1988 after 40 years in the industry. He was a member of Stuart Park Baptist Church. Companion Gober was raised in Hiwassee Lodge #188, Calhoun, TN and served as Worshipful Master in 1979 and 1981. He was a Plural member of Charleston Lodge #484. He was past Excellent High Priest of Cleveland, Chapter #39 Royal Arch Masons and received the Order of High Priesthood in March 1985. He was past Illustrious Master of Cleveland Council #124 and received the order of the Silver Trowel in March 1985 and was past Commander of Cleveland Commandery #28 and received the order of Knights Crusaders of the Cross in March 1987. He served as Crusader of the East of this order in 1995 and was a member of Knights Commander Asylum in Chattanooga. He was a member of the Tennessee Priory #15 and received the Knights of the York Cross of Honor in March 1987, the highest honorary degree in York Rite Masonry. He was past President of the Chattanooga York Rite Association and a charter member of Cherokee College #152 of Chattanooga York Rite Sovereign Colleges of North America. He received the Order of the Purple Cross in Tulsa, OK in July 1993. He served as Eminent Governor in 1994. He was a member of the Grand Master?s Club of the Knight Templar Eye Foundation, a member of the Lodge of Research of Georgia and Tennessee and a member of Calhoun?s chapter #187 of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Alhambra Shrine Temple in Chattanooga and is a lifetime member of the Royal Order of Scotland. He was charter and lifetime member of Georgia State Forest #181 of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon of North America and served as Grand Tall Cedar in 1993. He served his fourth term as Supreme Tall Cedar Foundation Trustee of district #5 and is a lifetime member of the East Tennessee Past Masters. Companion Gober was elected Grand Captain of the guard in March 1993 and advanced each year, being elected the Most Illustrious Grand Master on March 25, 1996. He was a member of the National Sojourners, chapter #514 of Knoxville, member of the Hero of 76ers and a lifetime member of the #365 National Sojourners. He was a member of the Collins Foundation, lifetime member of the mighty 8th Air Force Historical Society and Heritage Center. He was also a lifetime member the Air Force Gunner Association and a charter member of the World War II Memorial. He was a founding member of the Benjamin Franklin Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edward Gober, Curtis Gober and J.L. Gober; and mother of his children, Bobbie Wayne Shuptrine. He is survived by his children, Daniel Vaughn Warner and wife, Sally Little of Huntsville, AL, Sally Crumley and husband, Merrell of Cleveland, Donna Godsey of Decatur, Robin Gober and wife, Joyce of Hillsview, Dennis Lyle Gober and wife, Donna of Cleveland, and Tracey Gober of Cleveland; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Lorenzo of Kenner, LA; brothers, Earl Gober and wife Joyce of Pine Bluff, AR and Leroy Gober and wife, Mary of Tyro, AR; several nieces and nephews; and longtime companion, Imogene Woods. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Reverend Ron Sorah officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 from 4:00-8:00 at the funeral home.
