Shirley Chaffee Andrews

Shirley Chaffee Andrews, 82, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2009, in a local hospital. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Marian Chaffee of Fulton, New York. She graduated from Fulton High School and Geneseo State Teachers College (now SUNY Geneseo) in New York, where she majored in library science. In 1970 she received her masters degree in library science from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She was a resident of Cleveland for 45 years. She was employed by the Bradley County Board of Education from 1965 to 1994 as library coordinator. She was instrumental in starting libraries in all of the Bradley County elementary schools, many of which she began in hallways, on stages, and even in janitor?s closets. By the time she retired, most of the 15 Bradley County elementary schools had their own centralized libraries which were staffed by seven part-time and ten full-time librarians. She was a member of the Cleveland First Baptist Church and a faithful member of the Koinonia Sunday School class. She was a member of AARP, American Association of University Women, Tennessee Retired Teachers, and the Wildwood branch of FCE. She and her husband were members of the Calico Squares Dance Club for 24 years. She was an avid reader and loved to travel. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Kenneth L. Andrews. She is survived by daughters, Teena A. (Randall) Ray of Chattanooga and Natalie A. (Frank) White of Clarksville; son, David K. (Hilda) Andrews of Morristown; grandchildren, Andrew White of Clarksville and Bethany Andrews of Nashville; step-grandson Eric (Rachel) Beck of Bailey, Colorado, and their four sons; and nephew Jonathan Andrews of St. Louis, Missouri. She is also survived by three sisters: Barbara Whalen of Interlacken, Florida, and Sandra DeBalso and Rosemary Bartlett of Fulton, New York; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Griffith officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. A white dove release will conclude the service. The family will receive friends from 4:00 ? 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7 and from noon until the time of the service on Wednesday, July 8. Memorials may be given to the library of your choice.
