Steve McCoy, 55, went home to be with our Lord on January 6, 2009, in the early morning hours. He passed peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, after bravely battling cancer. Steve was a life long resident of Cleveland and had been co-owner of the family business, McCoy Rental Center and Napa Auto Parts for his entire adult life. Steve was very involved in the community, particularly with his children?s school and athletic programs and had served as Booster Club President at Trewhitt Junior High School for the 1992-1993 school year, during which time he was instrumental in the refurbishment of the football field. He also assisted with the Bradley High School football program during the 1994-1998 school years. A life long lover of aviation, Steve held his private pilot?s license and had built several aircraft for sport, including a Piper Super Club that he had nearly completed at the time of his death. Steve was proud to be a 1st Lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol and served as the CAP Aerospace Education Officer. Additionally, he had acted as advisor to the CAP cadets in the rocket launch competition for the past two years, which he considered an honor. Steve had many other hobbies, including building and restoring cars and other vehicles and was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. His main love, however, was his family, especially his wife, Sandy, to whom he had been happily married for over thirty-five years. Steve was also very close to his children, Haley and Zach, and was thrilled to be blessed with two wonderful grandchildren whom he adored. Steve is preceded by his father, Glenn McCoy, who passed in 2002. He is survived by his mother, Louise McCoy; wife, Sandy McCoy; brother, Mike McCoy; and son and daughter-in-law, Zach and Shawna McCoy all of Cleveland; as well as daughter and son-in-law, Haley and Blaker McPhail and grandchildren Bellamy and Sutton McPhail of Suffolk, Virginia. Steve chose for his remains to be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2008 at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Reverend Rod Dunn officiating. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, those who wish may a donation to the American Cancer Society, 850 Fortwood Street, Chattanooga, TN 37403.
