Dorothy Marlene Newton, of Cleveland, Tennessee, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the family residence. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was born on September 14, 1931 in Lovell, Wyoming; she was the first of three children. Marlene was a registered nurse and received her nursing degrees from Harper Hospital/Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California. She worked in ICU and the cardiac department. She was also a pediatric emergency nurse at Children?s Hospital of Michigan. Later, Marlene managed her husband?s medical practice for many years. As a volunteer, Marlene made a difference in many people?s lives. She started the Food Bank in Cleveland; was president of the Bradley County Medical Society Auxiliary, for which she started a scoliosis program and during her presidency received the Tennessee Medical Auxiliary?s Excellence in Achievement Award; was in charge of St. Luke?s Church Bazaar; was a member of the altar guild; and served as a volunteer at the Cleveland Five Points Museum. She was also involved in Home Health. In her free time, Marlene enjoyed tending to her roses, for which she won a number of awards. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Emily Grace and Christian Falk; brothers, Bob Felk and Chris Falk; and uncles, Charlie, Henry, John and Andy and Aunt Dorothy. Marlene is survived by her husband of forty-five years, Dr. Nicholas Newton; sons, Nicholas James and Crista of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, Christian Arthur and Jennifer of Signal Mountain, Tennessee and Michael David and Raquel of Signal Mountain, Tennessee; grandchildren, Chelsea Marlene, Nicholas David, Merrit Carolyn, Morgen Cate, Aidan Barret, Remington Reed, and Milo Thaddeus; cousins, Sally Hull, Vera, Nancy, Bob, Edmund and Andrew; niece, Susie and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2009 at the Ralph Buckner Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be conducted.
