James Cathey of Cleveland departed this life only to go into the arms of Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, whom he loved dearly. He was a member of Evening Light Gospel Tabernacle. He was a Sunday school superintendent for eleven years. He loved his Lord, church and church family. He serviced his country in the United States army. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #81. He was a former second vice. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James and Lily (Pullen) Cathey; son, Dale Cathey; granddaughter, Natashia (Tash) Cathey; mother-in-law, Elsie Mae Gates and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his family, whom he loved very much: his wife of 50 years, Jackie Cathey; his four sons, who nursed him and loved him until his last breath: Mitchell Cathey and wife, Betty of Cleveland, Mark Cathey and wife, Becky, Kim Cathey and wife, Mary of South Carolina and Tab Cathey and wife, Cindy of Calhoun; sisters, Diane Wade and husband, Floyd and Shirley Barkley of Etowah; brothers: Zane Walker and wife Wanda and Lanny Lockhart and wife Melvie; step mother, Marie Cathey of Etowah; grandsons: Joshua Cathey, Anthony Cathey, Nolan Cathey, Colt Cathey,and Jacob Roberts; granddaughters: Cansas Cathey, Alana Cathey, Sheena Cathey Austin, Shannan Gladden and Ziagana Cathey; great-grandchildren: Blake and Savannah Gladden, Tyler Lawson, Sunshine Austin and Ocean Austin; sisters-in-law and spouses: Delores Beaty and Reverend Bill Beaty and Norma Johnson and Bill Johnson; several nieces, nephews and friends also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, October 17, 2008 in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Beaty officiating. Interment will follow in Red Hill Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers will be Steve Liner, Brian Smith, William Smith, Clinton Beaty, Ricky Beaty and Bo Johnson. Honoray pallbearers will be Joshua Cathey and Nolan Cathey. His family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, October 16, 2008 at the funeral home.
