Kernon McConkey, 87, a resident of Cleveland for the past few months and formerly of Athens, passed away Monday, December 27, 2010, in a local hospital. He retired as a Lt. Col. having served with distinction in the United States Army for twenty-six years. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence B. and Georgia Bennett McConkey; and his first wife, Mary Lena McConkey; brother, Alfred McConkey He is survived by his wife, Mozelle McConkey; two children: Doris Diane Sarge and husband, John from Detroit, Michigan; and Mary Hart of Cleveland; one grandchild, Corrina Hart from Austin, TX; two great grandchildren: Asa Horn and Iris Horn both of Austin, TX; sister-in-law, Mary Alice McConkey of Knoxville; sister, Helen Steele and husband, Charles (C.E.) Edward of Chattanooga; step-daughters: Patti Francis and husband, David of Cleveland and Beverly Birody and husband, Bob of Apollo, PA; step grandson, Andrew Coppock and fiancé, Leslie Adamczyk both of Knoxville. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 7 P.M. Thursday, December 30, 2010 in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home.
