Mazie Woody

Mazie Annas Whaley Woody went home to meet her Lord and her family on August 7, 2008. She was born October 24, 1913 in Sevier County, Tennessee to the late Jack and Minnie Whaley. She was the oldest of twelve children and worked very hard on their farm. She was educated in a one room school house. She loved the Smoky Mountains where she was born and loved Cades Cove in particular. She moved to Bradley County when she was 18 with the entire Whaley clan. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a very early age. She was a devoted Christian and member of Waterville Baptist Church since 1952. She was very active in her church until her health failed and was noted for providing a helping hand to those in need. She often showed up at neighbor?s homes at just the right time with a skillet of cornbread. She cooked many a meal for Bradley Memorial Hospice families and was famous for her chicken and dressing. She loved to travel and meet new people. She never met a stranger. She volunteered with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile for many years and also served as gray lady volunteer at the Bradley Memorial Hospital for many years. She and her husband were active in the TVA Retirees Association where they looked after the Rhea Springs Campground every summer for several years. She also worked at voting polls for several years and was a staunch supporter of the Democrat Party. She loved to tell tall tales to the children in her life and could quote poems that she had learned in school i.e. "Under The Spreading Chestnut Tree". She played Santa Claus for several years at the Village Shopping Center and once it closed she played Santa at the local K-Mart. She played Santa at personal parties for children of family and friends. She married J.B. Woody in 1934 and had five children, four sons and one daughter. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, J.B. Woody; three sons Wendell Jackson, Ronald Kenneth and Perry Randall Woody; one brother, Loy Whaley and three sisters, Emma Blanchard, Agnes Wampler and Edna Dixon. She is survived by one son and his wife, John and Matt Woody of Seguin, TX and one daughter and her husband, Bobbie and Leon Atchley of Cleveland; grandsons and spouses: Rick and Lisa Atchley of Chattanooga, Chuck and Amy Atchley of Cleveland, Justin and Amanda Woody, Andy Woody all of Englewood, Tyson and Misti Woody of Lenoir City; granddaughters and spouses, Hayley and Mark Lee of Milton, FL, Heidi and Ken Metzger of Deltona, FL; seven great grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; two brothers, James Whaley , Leo and Peggy Whaley of Cohutta, GA.; five sisters, Ruth Foster of North Port, Alabama, Margie Parris, Ilena Davis, Mildred Fauscette and Wanda Tibbs of Cohutta, GA. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2008 in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Allan Lovelace officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rick Atchley, Chuck Atchley Tyson Woody, Justin Woody, Will Atchley, and Daniel Atchley serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer will be Andy Woody. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service. Her family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2008 at the funeral home prior to the service.
