William Johnson

October 18, 1938 — September 24, 2008

William "Jack" Johnson, 69, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2008, surrounded by friends and family in a local healthcare facility. He was a veteran of the United States Army and stood guard on President Kennedy?s casket. Known as the "Red Snapper" to his many friends in the trucking industry, Jack worked as a house mover and a car hauler prior to his retirement. He was an avid fisherman, a devoted family man and a follower of his Lord, Jesus Christ. Jack was the son of the late Calvin and Kattie Keith Johnson and was preceded in death by three brothers: Ernest Johnson, Glenn Johnson and Earl Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Scoggins Johnson of Cleveland; three children: Marcus Johnson, Freda Johnson Varnell and Karen Johnson all of Cleveland; three grandchildren: Kyle Varnell of Cleveland, Eric Varnell of East Ridge and Brandon Varnell of Cleveland; one great grandchild, Elijah Varnell; two sisters: Beuena Herron of Old Fort and Cyndia Baine of Cleveland; two brothers: Jerry Johnson Sr., and Joe Johnson both of Cleveland; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008 in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Lee Ingram and the Reverend William Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with a white dove release ceremony concluding the service. Kenny Key, Dewayne Key, Dean Herron, Heath Dunn, Jerry Barber and Kyle Varnell will serve as pallbearers. Jerry Johnson Jr., Eric Varnell and Brandon Varnell will serve as honorary pallbearers. His family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2008 at the funeral home.
