Joan Marie Adams Toney, 66, of Cleveland, passed away Monday, January 18, 2010 in a Knoxville healthcare facility. Although she was born and raised in Knoxville, she relocated to Cleveland to care for her ailing daughter. She quickly adopted Cleveland as her home. She renewed her faith by being confirmed into the Episcopal Church. She was active at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with altar guild and was an acolyte and lay reader. She volunteered at the 5Points Museum with the gift shop, children’s programs and various activities. Joan enjoyed reading to shut-ins, was active in FOLA, but became active in drama first with the Ocoee Players in Cleveland and then with the Gem Players in Etowah. She excelled in playing character roles of kooky drunks; however, the roles of the aunt in Anne of Gables, the mother in the Diary of Anne Frank, Karen in Plaza Suite with Larry Miller, and doing Love Letters with Tim Bodine will long be remembered. She excelled in quilt designing and sewing, having created many beautiful pieces for family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Mildred Adams; loving husband, Joe Toney, Jr.; and beautiful daughter, Jill Toney Prater. She is survived by two sons, Joe Toney and daughter-in-law, Darlene of Knoxville and James Michael Toney and daughter-in-law, Kate of Nashville; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. A private family service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life gathering on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Luke’s Parrish Hall. The family requests that memorials be made to the SPCA International, PO Box 1230, Washington, DC 20013, the Museum Center at 5points, 200 Inman St. E, Cleveland, TN 37311 or the Gem Theater, PO Box 486, Etowah, TN 37331.
