Dorothy Abel Campbell

Dorothy Abel Campbell, 91, of Cleveland, passed away Friday, June 4, 2010. A native of Cleveland, Dorothy was born on July 31, 1918. She graduated from Bradley High School and attended Tennessee Wesleyan and the University of Tennessee. She was the longest tenured member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, making her profession of faith on April 17, 1927. At Broad Street she taught children’s Sunday School, was a former president of the Fealty Sunday School class, and was very active in the Lunch Bunch and United Methodist Women’s activities. She was also a member of the UDC and the Embroidery Club. She enjoyed playing bridge in several groups over the years. During WWII, Dot helped with the war effort, serving as a driver in the Cleveland Civilian Defense Corps and later working in Boston as a women’s ordinance worker. Dot also enjoyed her work in the family business, Abel’s, Inc. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Campbell; her parents, R.R. and Pearl Abel; and two brothers, Walter and Glenn Abel. She is survived by: her daughter and son-in-law Cynthia and Frank Routson of Atlanta; her son and daughter-in-law Brad and Ann Campbell of Atlanta; four granddaughters-Kelly Greene, Cheryl Routson, Ashley Campbell all of Atlanta, and Allison Campbell of Charlotte, NC; one great-granddaughter, Campbell Greene; one brother Robert Abel and his wife Brenda of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, June 7, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Broad Street United Methodist Church with Pastor Debbie Stokes and Pastor Reed Shell officiating. Interment will follow in Ft. Hill Cemetery. Her family will receive friends on Sunday, June 6, 2010, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and also 1 hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
