Robert William Voorhees, 90, was born December 25, 1923 and went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 3, 2014. He passed away peacefully in a local health care facility.
He was a World War II veteran, fighting for his country in Guam, Guadalcanal and Okinawa. He was a radio technician on an ammunition tank during most of his service in the military.
Robert retired from Pratt Whitney Aircraft in Jupiter, FL in 1979, where he worked as a tool and die maker. After moving to Cleveland, he was able to indulge his many hobbies. He was a master craftsman who enjoyed building cabinets and furniture and he designed many beautiful intarsia pieces. He also designed and built, from the ground up, three homes for his family, two in Jupiter and one in Ocoee.
He loved music and played the guitar, the harmonica and the mandolin. He especially enjoyed “jammin” with the grandchildren. Robert was a man who enjoyed life and people and was never heard to say an unkind word about anyone. He was a loving husband, a wonderful father, father-in-law and grandfather. His motto was “there’s always a way”, and he demonstrated that throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Florentine Voorhees; several brothers and sisters; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Dawn Voorhees.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Dorothy Voorhees; two sons, Robert Gary Voorhees and wife, Sue of Pine, CO and Gary Lee Voorhees and wife, Sheryl of Ocoee, TN; brother, Fred Voorhees of Pawpaw, MI; half brother, Eddie Lynch and wife, Betty of Ilion, NY; four grandchildren, David Voorhees and wife, Lynn of Louisville, CO, Lara DeSotel and husband, Scott of Moore, IN, Shawn Voorhees and wife, Beth of Cleveland and Matthew Voorhees of San Francisco, CA; two great granddaughters, Nicole DeSotel and Alexandria Voorhees; three great grandsons, Davy Voorhees, Sammy Voorhees and Ethan Voorhees; and one great great granddaughter, Micol Voorhees; and his best friend and brother-in-law, George Graudon , who served with him in World War II.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date at the request of his wife, who wishes a joint service for them upon her demise.
