Evelyn Merricks Davis, age 95, of 100 Old York Rd., Cleveland, TN died on Monday, April 11, 2016. Evelyn was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on January 19, 1921 to: John Roy and Ethel Riddle Merricks. She trusted Jesus Christ as her Savior at the age of sixteen. She married Morris Edward Davis of Caswell County, North Carolina on December 30, 1939.
Evelyn was employed 38 years with Dan River Textile Mills in addition to assisting her husband on the farm before his untimely death. After her husband’s death and her retirement from Dan River, Evelyn has lived with her son in Florida and Tennessee, except for the ten years that her son made his residence in Africa. She was most recently a loved member of Shenandoah Baptist Church in Cleveland, TN where her funeral service will be officiated by Pastor Brent Coley.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Morris, July 9, 1979; daughters: Jean Davis Snead, September 23, 2014 and Carol Davis Travis, March 3, 2013; great grandson, Luke Allen Maples, December 29, 2005; two brothers: Coleman C. Merricks and Bill R. Merricks; six sisters: Mrs. Mozelle McKinsey, Mrs. Bernice Clayton, Mrs. Mildred Shelton, Mrs. Chaney Gray, Mrs. Betty Stokes, and Mrs. Coralean Hancock.
Mrs. Davis is survived by: son, Morris Ray Davis (wife, Sheila); grandchildren: Natalie Travis Cass, Annette Snead Tussel, Mark Snead, Gregory Travis, Angela Davis Hughen, Robbin Davis Maples; seventeen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the Shenandoah Baptist Church with Pastor Brent Coley officiating. A final graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016 in Highland Burial Park in Danville, Virginia with her son, Reverend Ray Davis officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the church prior to the service.
