Patricia B. Thompson, 76, died on Thursday, August 4, 2016 following her lengthy battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. She died as she lived her life - with incredible grace and dignity. She was born in Charleston, Tennessee to Frank Bryan, who was the Mayor of Charleston for many years, and Ruth Bryan, who taught elementary school at Charleston for 30 years. She was a graduate of Bradley High School, where she excelled on the varsity basketball team. She attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and was a member Chi Omega Sorority. While attending the University of Tennessee she met and married her husband James S. Thompson.
She was preceded in death by many dearly loved family members including her parents; sister, Judy Bryan and brother, Steve Bryan.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jim Thompson; her children Robert Thompson and wife, Ramona, Christy Buttrey and husband, Mike, and Cathy Peterson. She loved spending time with her nine grandchildren, Lauren Garner, Danielle Garner, Gabrielle Thompson, Emma Thompson, Elsa Thompson, Adelaide Thompson, Ben Buttrey, Matthew Peterson and Andrew Peterson.
Patricia firmly believed that the quality of one’s life is to a large extent determined by the quality of one’s friendships. She had amazing friends. She enjoyed her Bridge Club, her tennis buddies, and for many years, playing golf with the Whiffer’s group. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church for over 50 years and loved her Sunday school class.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care provided by Hospice of Chattanooga, and Dr. Royce McBride. The family will be forever indebted to Melba Floyd and Tammy Reed, who provided amazing love, care and support during this last year.
A gathering of friends will celebrate her life this Sunday from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Museum Center at Five Points located at 200 Inman Street, Cleveland. A brief program will take place promptly at 5:00 p.m. A private graveside service will be held Sunday evening at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Brad Brown officiating. The honorary pallbearers are: Ronnie McNeal, Sonny Hicks, Billy Fred Allen, James F. Logan Jr., Larry Allen, Dr. John Bryan and Tom Becktold.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 340 Peerless Road, NW, Cleveland, TN 37312 or to Hospice of Chattanooga, 2156 Keith Street, Cleveland, TN 37311.
